To the Editor

I used to own a gin mill/night club named after some lyrics and song titles of Harry’s: “Tanner's Tool and Die — A Better Place to Be” in Tannersville, NY — right outside of Hunter Mountain, NY.

We had many live bands play for us, such as Alive ’n Kickin, Salvation, The Greaseband, and The Lynch Boys, and no matter the style /playlist, every night, the last song by the DJ (me) was always A Better Place to Be.

It was my way of indoctrinating the ones who were not familiar with Harry’s great legacy. People loved it as a good night song.

We ran a benefit for WHY in 1983 — in tribute to Harry and the cause. And I found an old flier from those shows back in 1983. If memory serves me right I think we raised about $3000 for WHY.

Included on the bill were the Cunningham Bros. Their father was an old accordion player who played way, way back in the day with Harry’s father’s band.

Tom Chapin and Pete Seeger made the journey up to the Mountain and played for hours, and it was a great couple of nights indeed. I remember Tom saying to me that if Harry had been alive when we owned the place he’d have definitely loved to see the place.

Regards,

Greg McCaig
