To the Editor

It was 1973.

I lived in Charlestown, Mass.

My grandmother was Mae Wallace who was a good friend of Mary Marsden from Cook Street. They used to go to ceramics classes together in the late 1960's. One night I had to help Nana carry bags up to Mrs. Marsden, and of course sit and talk.

Peachie and Zeke Marsden lived in that same house. Next thing I know this very tall man pulled up in a station wagon with little kids. Everyone was unloading stuff and I wound up holding a beautiful blonde baby, another little one was put in a high chair.

There was some momentary panic when one of the kids, a boy about 10 couldn't be found. They found the little guy under a bunch of sleeping bags sound asleep. I had no idea at the time what was going on.

Next thing I knew Harry Chapin was playing a song he had rolling in his head — Mail Order Annie. He signed an autograph and took a picture with me and my grandmother. She later came across Harry several more times.

What stands out in my mind was just what a nice guy Harry was and what a wonderful, gentle loving mom Sandy was.

I am now a school nurse for 700 high school boys. I love every day of my life because I think, I know I make a difference in a lot of young men's lives. We are not a school with a lot of money but no one does the loving care and concern better than this faculty and staff.

I choose this life, when my friends are making triple the salary, because I wish to make a difference and change a small part of the world.

I thank Harry every day of my life. Today I offered my morning prayers for you and for him.

With my thanks and appreciation,

Elizabeth Paquette
